Accanto al dolore per la morte di Papa Francesco, avverto, come ho detto stamani, un senso di vuoto: il senso della privazione di un punto di riferimento cui guardavo.
Ha conquistato il mondo, sin dal primo momento, già con la scelta del nome.
Gesuita, figlio della spiritualità di S. Ignazio, si è richiamato a San Francesco, sottolineando la ricchezza dei carismi che nella Chiesa si integrano.
Come non ricordare “Laudato si” sull’equità nell’uso delle risorse naturali? O “Fratelli tutti” sulla unicità della famiglia umana? O la sua costante attenzione alle periferie del mondo, ai poveri, ai più deboli, ai migranti? Certamente anche ricordando i suoi avi emigrati dal Piemonte in Argentina. O la sua preghiera da solo in piazza San Pietro nei giorni del covid?
Francesco è stato sempre uomo di speranza convinta contro ogni difficoltà.
L’ha trasmessa anche nei giorni della sua malattia offrendo un esempio per tutti i sofferenti.
Ricordo con grande riconoscenza le tante occasioni di incontro. La sua visita al Quirinale storica, gli incontri non ufficiali, riservati, personali.
Su tutto si impone un pensiero. Quel che ha deciso di fare ieri, nel giorno di Pasqua, con la benedizione al mondo, e il giro in piazza, tra i fedeli con il suo ultimo richiamo al principio di umanità, come criterio di condotta per ciascuno.
Oggi, appare come un saluto alla Chiesa e alle donne e agli uomini di tutto il mondo.
La risposta a questo saluto da parte di tutti nel mondo non deve limitarsi al ricordo e alla riconoscenza ma deve tradursi in responsabilità, nel far proprie nei comportamenti quotidiani le indicazioni dei suoi insegnamenti.

Particularly the Catholics in Germany, but also – in the spirit of ecumenical solidarity – many Protestant Christians in our country, join me in mourning an important Pope and the direct successor of the German-born Benedict XVI.
In Pope Francis, the world has lost a shining beacon of hope, a credible advocate of humanity and a convincing Christian. His modesty, his spontaneity and his humour, but above all his tangibly profound faith, touched people all over the world, giving them support, strength and guidance.
For so very many people, Pope Francis was a credible witness to the Christian message for whom prime importance attached to the practical application of faith.
From the very first days of his tenure as Bishop of Rome, he showed that the poor and the marginalised, the displaced and refugees could be sure of his particular attention, his particular care, indeed his particular love. Many who had believed themselves forgotten felt that he, the Pope, heard, saw and understood them.
Pope Francis always regarded his office as one of service to all Christians, indeed all people of good will. He shaped his papacy as an offer of dialogue, as an opportunity to build bridges, as an invitation to work together for a better and fairer world.
Pope Francis was a man of peace. And he was deeply convinced that the peace that is so sorely missed and longed for in so many parts of the world can grow and become established only where people of differing convictions, differing faiths and differing lifestyles come together with respect, appreciation and a desire for reconciliation.
Rooted in his Christian faith, Pope Francis’s work for peace was inextricably linked with his concern for the preservation of Creation and for a just economic order. His major Encyclicals, in particular Laudato si’ and Fratelli tutti, are impressive testimonials to these political and social concerns deriving from faith-led responsibility.
We can all be thankful for Pope Francis and his blessed work.

It is with great sadness that Jill and I learned of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. He was unlike any who came before him. Pope Francis will be remembered as one of the most consequential leaders of our time and I am better for having known him. For decades, he served the most vulnerable across Argentina and his mission of serving the poor never ceased.
As Pope, he was a loving pastor and challenging teacher who reached out to different faiths. He commanded us to fight for peace and protect our planet from a climate crisis. He advocated for the voiceless and powerless.
He made all feel welcome and seen by the Church. He promoted equity and an end to poverty and suffering across the globe. And above all, he was a Pope for everyone. He was the People’s Pope – a light of faith, hope, and love.

Pope Francis was the rare leader who made us want to be better people. Today, Michelle and I mourn with everyone around the world — Catholic and non-Catholic alike — who drew strength and inspiration from the Pope’s example. May we continue to heed his call to “never remain on the sidelines of this march of living hope”.

Sono in lutto per Papa Francesco. Lo ricorderò come una personalità le cui azioni erano improntate all’amore per il prossimo. Durante i suoi dodici anni di pontificato, ha avuto particolarmente a cuore coloro che non potevano far sentire la propria voce.
Non ha mai esitato a mettersi in gioco. Come primo papa latinoamericano, ha guardato all’Europa con occhi nuovi. Durante i suoi viaggi ha visitato i focolai di crisi del nostro mondo e ha messo il dito nella piaga delle ferite causate da guerre e conflitti irrisolti.
Nei colloqui che ho avuto modo di avere con lui, ha caldamente raccomandato di costruire ponti anche in conflitti apparentemente insormontabili. Ha sempre avuto uno sguardo aperto sulla diversità del mondo. Ho conosciuto Papa Francesco come una persona caratterizzata da un ottimismo incrollabile e contagioso.

His Excellency Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, emphasized that Pope Francis devoted his life to serving humanity and advancing the values of dialogue, tolerance, coexistence, peace, and human fraternity while he also tirelessly supported the vulnerable, needy, refugees, and the displaced, embodying a singular example of compassion and becoming a historic religious figure whose enduring humanitarian legacy will inspire future generations.
In partnership with His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, Pope Francis co-authored the historic Document on Human Fraternity, widely regarded as one of the most significant documents in modern human history.

Oggi l’umanità sta perdendo la voce del rispetto e dell’accoglienza del prossimo. Papa Francesco ha vissuto e propagato nella sua vita quotidiana l’amore, la tolleranza e la solidarietà che sono alla base degli insegnamenti cristiani.
Come insegna la preghiera di San Francesco d’Assisi, l’argentino Jorge Bergoglio ha cercato instancabilmente di portare amore dove c’era odio. L’unità dove c’era discordia. Ideali di cui il mondo ha sempre avuto bisogno. E di cui avrà sempre bisogno. Possa Dio confortare coloro che oggi, ovunque nel mondo, soffrono il dolore di questa enorme perdita. Papa Francesco è tornato alla casa del Padre. Una notizia che ci addolora profondamente, perché ci lascia un grande uomo e un grande pastore. I want to extend my deepest condolences to Catholics, and all those around the world, inspired by the extraordinary life and example of His Holiness Pope Francis.
Pope Francis was a messenger of hope, humility and humanity. He was a transcendent voice for peace, human dignity and social justice. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, service and compassion for all — especially those on the margins of life or trapped by the horrors of conflict.
Pope Francis was a man of faith for all faiths — working with people of all beliefs and backgrounds to light a path forward.
Through the years, we at the United Nations were greatly inspired by his commitment to the goals and ideals of our organization — a message I was honoured to convey in my meetings with him as Secretary-General.
Pope Francis also understood that protecting our common home is, at heart, a deeply moral mission and responsibility that belongs to every person. Many of us find great meaning in his final Easter message delivered just yesterday. He appealed for us not to yield to – as he called it – the “logic of fear”.
Instead, he urged the world to invest in what he referred to as the “weapons of peace” – to help the most vulnerable, to fight hunger, to advance development.
Our divided and discordant world will be a much better place if we follow his example of unity and mutual understanding in our own actions.
